Paris: BTS leader Kim Namjoon, also known as RM, recently found himself at the center of a heated online debate after a brief video clip surfaced on social media, allegedly showing him smoking in public on a sidewalk in Paris.

The footage, initially uploaded by a user on X (formerly Twitter), rapidly spread across various platforms, prompting a mix of reactions from internet users. While some believed the man in the clip was indeed RM, others were uncertain, sparking a flurry of speculation.

As the clip gained traction, people were quick to call out RM’s behavior, criticising what they perceived as a lack of public etiquette.

Some viewers were especially concerned about the possibility that the individual had blown smoke toward a nearby person, deeming such conduct disrespectful.

These actions, if true, led some social media users to question RM’s manners in public settings, particularly in foreign countries, where celebrities are often expected to set a positive example.

A netizen said, “He wants to go viral so bad because posting it on his ig story failed and nobody cared.” Another user defended him by commenting, “You all leave him alone, we doesn't give a shit about you anyways.” Other comments read, “Haters saw Namjoon smoking first and I am not?! Ahhh guys you are so obsessed with him more than his fans.” A true RM fan mockingly expressed, “How funny... try again to see if your information is important .. occupy your time in other things.”

However, fans of RM quickly rallied to his defense. Many pointed out that he is an adult and has every right to make personal choices, including smoking. Supporters condemned the invasion of his privacy, arguing that filming and sharing such moments without consent is inappropriate.

They also noted that being a public figure does not eliminate one’s right to engage in legal personal habits privately or semi-privately. This led to a broader discussion about the boundaries between public accountability and respecting a celebrity’s personal space.

Amid this social media controversy, RM has been active professionally. On June 17, 2025, he was officially named the new global ambassador for Samsung’s Art TV division.

His first public appearance after completing his mandatory military service on June 10, 2025, was at a Samsung-curated art exhibition during Art Basel in Switzerland.

The event highlighted his growing involvement in the art world, and RM later shared moments from the exhibition on his Instagram, drawing praise for his cultural engagement.

While the smoking incident sparked backlash, it also reignited conversations about the pressures placed on celebrities to maintain a flawless public image.

As discussions continue, many of RM’s supporters emphasize the importance of privacy, maturity, and the need for empathy when judging public figures based on brief, context-lacking clips.
