Congress MP Priyanka Gandhi Vadra on Sunday expressed deep sorrow over the demise of veteran Malayalam actor, screenwriter, and director Sreenivasan, remembering him as a filmmaker whose work left an enduring impact on Indian cinema.
Taking to social media platform X, Vadra paid tribute to Sreenivasan’s decades-long contribution to films, highlighting his humane storytelling, sharp wit and ability to connect deeply with audiences across generations.
“Deeply saddened by the passing of Malayalam actor and filmmaker Sreenivasan ji. His humane storytelling, sharp wit, and timeless performances enriched Indian cinema and touched countless hearts. My heartfelt condolences to his family and admirers,” Priyanka Gandhi Vadra wrote.
Sreenivasan passed away at the age of 69. His last rites were performed on Sunday morning in Kochi, attended by family members, close friends and several figures from the Malayalam film industry.
Tributes poured in from across Kerala following his death. Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan described Sreenivasan’s passing as an “irreparable loss” to Malayalam cinema, noting that he excelled across multiple domains of filmmaking.
In a statement released by the Chief Minister’s Office, Vijayan said Sreenivasan brought the life of the common man to the silver screen with rare authenticity, using humour and reflection to provoke thought and social awareness while breaking long-standing cinematic conventions.
Kerala Governor Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar also condoled the actor’s death, saying Sreenivasan’s iconic performances and lasting contributions would be remembered forever, and extended condolences to his bereaved family.
A towering presence in Malayalam cinema for over four decades, Sreenivasan was widely admired for his socially relevant narratives, memorable characters, and fearless commentary on contemporary issues, leaving behind a legacy that continues to inspire filmmakers and audiences alike.
