Veteran actor Pradeep Rawat, known for leaving a lasting impression across television and Indian cinema, has passed away at the age of 74 after a battle with cancer. While many younger audiences remember him as the menacing villain from ‘Ghajini’, his career stretched across more than four decades and several film industries, making him one of India's most recognisable character actors. His manager confirmed that Rawat had suffered a relapse of cancer and had been hospitalised for over a month before his demise.

Rawat's acting journey began in the 1980s, but it was BR Chopra's iconic television series ‘Mahabharat’ that first brought him into the spotlight. His portrayal of Ashwatthama, the fierce warrior and son of Dronacharya, became one of the most memorable performances from the legendary series.

For many viewers, he would always be remembered as Ashwatthama before he became one of Indian cinema's most feared on-screen villains.

As his career progressed, Rawat built a reputation for playing intense, powerful characters. He appeared in acclaimed Hindi films such as ‘Sarfarosh’, ‘Lagaan’, and ‘The Hero: Love Story of a Spy’, steadily becoming a dependable presence in supporting and negative roles.

One of his most memorable performances came in Ashutosh Gowariker's ‘Lagaan’, where he played Deva Singh Sodhi, the fearless Sikh cricketer whose arrival changes the dynamics of Bhuvan's team. The role remains one of the film's most-loved supporting performances.

Rawat later reached an even wider audience with AR Murugadoss' Tamil blockbuster ‘Ghajini’, where he played the ruthless crime lord Ghajini Dharmatma. The performance proved so impactful that he reprised the same role in the Hindi remake opposite Aamir Khan, making him one of the few actors retained across both versions of the film.

Another major milestone came with SS Rajamouli's ‘Sye’, which marked Rawat's Telugu debut. His portrayal of the intimidating Bikshu Yadav earned widespread praise and won him several awards, including the Filmfare Award, Nandi Award, and Santosham Award for Best Villain. The film established him as one of Telugu cinema's most sought-after antagonists.

Over the years, Rawat worked across Hindi, Telugu, Tamil, Kannada, Malayalam, Bengali, Bhojpuri, Marathi and Nepali cinema, showcasing remarkable versatility.

His filmography includes titles such as ‘Stalin’, ‘Desamuduru’, ‘Veeram’, ‘1: Nenokkadine’, ‘Loukyam’, ‘Nene Raju Nene Mantri’, ‘Sarrainodu’, ‘Naayak’, ‘Rowdy Rathore’, ‘Singh Is Bliing’, ‘Grand Masti’, ‘Market Raja MBBS’, ‘Miss Match’, and ‘Waltair Veerayya’, among many others.

Even in the later stages of his career, Rawat remained active. He appeared in films such as ‘Gulu Gulu’, ‘Chhaava’, and also took on projects in Marathi and Nepali cinema, continuing to work across industries until his final years.
