Actor Mouni Roy has spoken out against the wave of online trolling and speculation surrounding her appearance, after she recently debuted a new hairstyle with bangs.

The actor, who is currently promoting her upcoming horror-comedy The Bhootnii, has been the subject of claims that she underwent cosmetic surgery, which trolls allege she tried to conceal with her haircut.

In an interview with Zoom, Mouni addressed the issue directly, stating that she feels pity for those behind the negativity. “Initially, when I read those comments… till date, sometimes I see those AI videos, and suddenly you feel… it’s so cringe, you can’t… and it’s yourself, right? Imagine how you feel looking at somebody else. And when I see my face distorted over other people’s bodies, it’s disgusting,” she said.

She added that such trolls, who create and share synthetically generated videos showing her with exaggerated facial features, are only collecting “people’s curses and bad wishes.” She continued, “Nobody can wish well for someone who’s doing that.”

Mouni also reflected on how her perception of online hate has changed over time. “Initially, when I’d come on Instagram and I’d get a lot of hate, I’d actually make the effort of going to their profiles and blocking them… Now I feel very pitiful. I feel you should pray for them. These are phantom people, hiding behind their screens, writing all these things,” she said.

Emphasising that social media has become a space where people post hurtful content just to gain attention, she said, “I genuinely feel that section of the internet, like socials, has become a very, very nasty place because people are genuinely just writing rubbish and vicious things about others just to get likes.”

Despite the online attacks, Mouni remains focused on her work and the support she receives from her fans. “I can’t negate the love I receive from my fans,” she said.
