Netflix’s gripping crime thriller ‘Sector 36’ has been garnering widespread acclaim, with critics and audiences alike singling out a particularly chilling interrogation scene as a masterclass in tension and performances.

Now, the mastermind behind this cinematic triumph—director Aditya Nimbalkar along with actor Vikrant Massey—takes us behind the scenes of that unforgettable sequence, shedding light on the creative decisions and emotional depths that made it so hauntingly effective.

Aditya delved into the intricacies of crafting suspense, pushing actors to their limits, and the meticulous attention to detail that has earned their film rave reviews and a spot in the must-watch lists of cinephiles everywhere.

Talking about the interrogation scene, the director said, “That scene was the one I was both excited and nervous to film. Bodhayan (Roychaudhury) deserves credit for writing such a complex sequence, and Saurabh Goswami, our cinematographer, and I planned every detail meticulously. While we allowed for some improvisation, every nuance, reaction, and movement was mapped out to ensure a seamless flow. Vikrant carried much of the heavy lifting, delivering an exceptional performance, while Deepak (Dobriyal) sir, with fewer dialogues, showed how powerful expressions can be. Baharul Islam’s presence also added depth to the scene.”

“Sreekar Prasad, our editor, paced the drama perfectly, maintaining tension and letting key moments breathe. Subrata Chakraborty and Amit Ray's production design created a gritty, realistic atmosphere, while Ketan Sodha’s score and Mandar Kulkarni’s sound design elevated the emotional intensity, making the scene even more impactful. All these elements came together to create something far beyond what we had envisioned,"  he added.

While the technicalities of the scene were on point, what elevated it were the brilliant acts performed by the leading actors—Vikrant, who narrated the chilling crimes, and Deepak, who expressed the horror and shock at it with mere lines and great emotions.

Recalling the filming, Vikrant said, “I’m truly overwhelmed by the incredible reactions the film is receiving, especially for the interrogation scene, which is easily my favourite. There was something raw and unfiltered about that moment—Deepak sir and I were so deeply immersed in our characters that everything else faded away. It felt as though the room was stripped of its reality. It was just the three of us—Deepak sir, Baharul sir, and me—completely absorbed in the intensity of the scene. That level of immersion is rare, and I think that’s why the scene resonated so strongly with the audience. The energy in that room was palpable, and I’m grateful we were able to capture it on screen.”

‘Sector 36’, backed by Dinesh Vijan’s Maddock Films, is inspired by true events. The film skipped a theatrical release and has been available for streaming on the OTT giant since September 13.
