Kolkata: Renowned Bengali film and television actress Basanti Chatterjee passed away at her residence in Kolkata on Tuesday night, her family confirmed. She was 88 years old.

Chatterjee had been battling cancer for an extended period. According to the West Bengal Motion Picture Artists' Forum, she had spent several months in intensive care before being discharged on medical advice to be cared for at home under nursing supervision.

Career

In a distinguished career spanning over five decades, Chatterjee featured in more than 100 films, including both critically acclaimed and commercially successful works. Notable titles include Thagini, Manjari Opera, and Alo.

She was also a familiar face on Bengali television, with memorable roles in popular serials such as Bhutu, Boron, and Durga Durgeshwari.

Her final television appearance was in the series Gita LLB, during the production of which her health deteriorated significantly.

During her earlier years, Chatterjee was active in the theatre scene, regularly performing in stage productions, further cementing her reputation as a versatile and respected artist.

Reacting to her death, actor Bhaswar Chatterjee said, "She had been experiencing a lot of physical pain lately." He added that despite her illness and age, her dedication to her craft remained unmatched and her contribution to Bengali cinema and television is irreplaceable.
