The 1989 Tamil blockbuster 'Varusham Padhinaaru,' directed by veteran Malayalam director Fazil, remains a celebrated classic. Recently, filmmaker Alleppey Ashraf unveiled details about the film's origin and casting through his YouTube channel 'Alleppey Ashraf Kandathum Kettathum'.

Initially, Fazil had planned to remake the Malayalam hit 'Kakkothikkavile Appooppan Thaadikal' in Tamil. During a song recording session, music maestro Ilaiyaraja requested a detailed narration of the story. After hearing the plot, Ilaiyaraja expressed reservations, commenting, “A film about beggars won’t work in Tamil Nadu,” and urged Fazil to consider another storyline.

Fazil then narrated the plot of 'Ennennum Kannettante.' Ilaiyaraja, impressed by the narrative, predicted it would resonate with Tamil audiences. Taking this advice, Fazil shelved the original plan and decided to adapt 'Ennennum Kannettante.'

Actor Karthik was roped in for the male lead, and the search for a fresh face for the female lead began. Fazil's makeup artist suggested a North Indian actress who had done minor roles and was in Madras at the time. That actress was Khushbu, who would later become one of Tamil cinema's most beloved stars.

After Khushbu's audition, several members of the team expressed doubts, remarking that she had a “Chinese look” and might not appeal to the Tamil audience. However, Fazil was deeply impressed by her acting prowess and remained steadfast in his decision. This marked the rise of Khushbu as a leading actress.
