Tom Holland has once again set Marvel fans theorising about the future of ‘Spider-Man’ after giving an unexpected response during a recent interview, just as 'Spider-Man: Brand New Day' continues its dominant run at the global box office. 

The latest instalment in Sony and Marvel's Spider-Man franchise has enjoyed a blockbuster debut since its July 30 release, earning widespread praise from critics and audiences alike. As the film continues to break box office records and draw acclaim as one of the strongest ‘Spider-Man’ films yet, attention has quickly shifted from its success to what may come next for Holland's beloved web-slinger.

The actor, who has built a reputation for accidentally revealing Marvel secrets over the years, has now fuelled fresh rumours of a possible fifth solo ‘Spider-Man’ film with a single-word response that fans believe may not have been accidental.

One word that got Marvel fans talking

During a rapid-fire interview with French media outlet HugoDécrypte, Holland was asked whether he would return for a fifth Spider-Man film "without hesitation."

Rather than answering yes or no, the actor simply responded, "Pass."

It was the only question Holland declined to answer during the segment, immediately prompting speculation across social media. Many fans interpreted his refusal as a sign that discussions about another Spider-Man film may already be underway, with some suggesting he deliberately avoided revealing future Marvel plans.

While Holland offered no further explanation, the moment quickly went viral, adding fresh momentum to speculation surrounding the future of the franchise.

Holland has already hinted at a long-term plan

The latest interview comes only weeks after Holland acknowledged that conversations about Spider-Man's long-term future have been taking place for several years.

Speaking on the 'Happy Sad Confused' podcast, the actor revealed that plans for the character extend well beyond his current outing.

"There's a whole plan that we have been working on for, I would say, since we finished ‘Spider-Man: No Way Home’...it's laid out. It's gonna change for sure, but I have a really clear vision to the passing on of the baton, and I think it's really exciting."

He added that discussions about the future of the character are among the projects he is most excited about, suggesting Marvel and Sony have already begun mapping out the next phase of Spider-Man's story.

Passing the baton remains part of the vision

Although Holland has spoken openly about eventually stepping aside as ‘Spider-Man’, he has also made it clear that he is not ready to leave the role just yet.

In an interview with GQ, he reflected on balancing the future of the character with his own continued involvement.

"I would love to pass the baton on, but I haven't achieved that yet … I think the truth is that playing Spider-Man has been the joy of my life. I now kind of stand on the plinth of like, I'll do it for as long as they'll have me."

Earlier this year, Holland also said he hopes to help introduce the next generation of Spider-Man characters, drawing comparisons to the mentorship he received from Robert Downey Jr when he entered the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

He previously told Empire that he would like to help launch a successor, whether that is Miles Morales, Spider-Gwen or another Spider-themed hero, adding that he would be happy to support the next chapter of the franchise in the same way Downey helped him.

Holland has even floated the idea of 'Adolescence' star Owen Cooper as a potential future Spider-Man, praising the young actor's talent during an interview with Esquire UK.

'Brand New Day' continues its winning streak

The renewed speculation arrives as 'Spider-Man: Brand New Day' enjoys a hugely successful theatrical run.

Directed by Destin Daniel Cretton, the 2 hour 25 minute movie sees Holland reprise his role alongside Zendaya, Sadie Sink, Jacob Batalon and Jon Bernthal. Picking up after the events of 'Spider-Man: No Way Home', the story follows Peter Parker as he embraces life as New York's friendly neighbourhood Spider-Man after the world has forgotten his identity.

The film has become one of the year's biggest releases, with audiences praising both its emotional storytelling and action sequences, further strengthening calls for Holland to continue leading the franchise.

Holland celebrates Spider-Man's expanding universe

Beyond his own films, Holland has also welcomed the growing number of ‘Spider-Man’ stories being told across different formats.

Speaking on the 'Happy Sad Confused' podcast, he praised projects including 'Spider-Noir' and Sony's animated Spider-Verse films, calling the animated entries some of the finest ‘Spider-Man’ films ever made and applauding the emotional depth they bring to the character.
