Action star Tom Cruise has officially earned a Guinness World Record for his daring performance in the latest installment of the 'Mission: Impossible' film series, 'Mission: Impossible -- The Final Reckoning'. Cruise set the record for the "most burning parachute jumps by an individual".
The remarkable feat involved Cruise jumping out of a helicopter 16 times with a fuel-soaked parachute set ablaze, a perilous stunt designed for the dramatic conclusion of the long-running action franchise, as reported by Deadline.
"Tom doesn't just play action heroes - he is an action hero!" stated Craig Glenday, Guinness World Records editor-in-chief. "A large part of his success can be chalked up to his absolute focus on authenticity and pushing the boundaries of what a leading man can do. It's an honour to be able to recognise his utter fearlessness with this new Guinness World Records title."
How was the stunt executed?
Cruise and the extensive stunt team dedicated weeks to preparing for the complex sequence in Drakensberg, South Africa. The actor ascended over 75,000 feet in a helicopter before performing the flaming parachute jump, at which point he cut himself free and deployed a backup parachute.
For several takes, Cruise carried a 50-lb. Snorri camera rig attached to his body to capture close-up shots of the fiery spectacle.
A behind-the-scenes featurette showcased all 16 takes, with Cruise emphasizing safety during the preparations: "We're gonna be real smart. I'm not saying be risky. We don't take risks... obviously."
