Suri Cruise, the 20-year-old daughter of Hollywood stars Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes, has legally dropped her father's surname and is now officially known as Suri Noelle, according to public voter registration records in Pennsylvania.

Suri had already begun using the surname 'Noelle' publicly before the legal change, appearing under the name during her high school graduation in June 2024. 'Noelle' is also Katie Holmes' middle name. The move has reignited public interest in Suri's long-reported estrangement from her father, with whom she has rarely been publicly linked since Holmes and Cruise divorced more than a decade ago. 

Voter records confirm legal name change

According to voter registration records first reported by Page Six, Suri registered to vote in Allegheny County, Pennsylvania, in October 2024 while attending her first year at Carnegie Mellon University. The records list her legal name as Suri Noelle.

Under Pennsylvania law, voters are required to register using their legal names, indicating that the surname change had already been formalised. Reports also noted that no name-change filing exists in Allegheny County, suggesting the legal process may have been completed earlier in New York, where Suri lived with Holmes before leaving for university.

A name she had already begun using

The legal change follows a public shift that first drew attention during Suri's high school graduation in June 2024, when the graduation programme identified her as Suri Noelle instead of Suri Cruise.

The timing also attracted media attention because, on the same weekend, Tom Cruise was photographed attending Taylor Swift's Eras Tour concert at London's Wembley Stadium while his daughter celebrated her graduation separately.

Sources cited in earlier reports said Suri chose the name as a tribute to her mother while also hoping to establish her own identity and begin college life with a fresh start. The surname 'Noelle' is also Holmes' middle name.

Katie Holmes reflects on daughter leaving for college

A few months after Suri left for university, Holmes spoke publicly about the transition during an interview with Town & Country.

'I'm proud of my daughter. Of course, I will miss the close proximity, but I'm really proud of her and I'm happy,' Holmes said.

'I remember being this age, this time of beginnings. It's exciting to learn about yourself, and I loved that time, so it makes me happy to think about it like that.'

The actor has generally kept her daughter's private life out of the spotlight since her separation from Cruise, although she has occasionally spoken about watching Suri enter adulthood.

Holmes previously dismissed trust fund claims

Holmes also made headlines in December 2024 after publicly rejecting reports concerning Suri's finances.

Responding to claims that her daughter had inherited a trust fund from Cruise upon turning 18, Holmes posted on Instagram: 'Completely false.'

'Daily Mail you can stop making stuff up.'

She added a brief caption reading: 'Enough.'

A largely private life after her parents' divorce

Cruise and Holmes welcomed Suri in April 2006, married later that year and divorced in 2012. Following the split, Holmes primarily raised their daughter in New York while maintaining a relatively private upbringing away from the constant public attention surrounding her famous parents.

Despite remaining largely out of the spotlight, Suri has occasionally been photographed with Holmes. In August 2025, she was seen visiting her mother on the New York set of the film 'Happy Hours', where Holmes was filming alongside her former 'Dawson's Creek' co-star Joshua Jackson.

Building a future in theatre

Now pursuing musical theatre at Carnegie Mellon University's School of Drama, Suri has increasingly focused on stage performance.

She previously played Morticia Addams in a high school production of 'The Addams Family: A New Musical' before taking part in the staged reading 'Cosmic Microwave Background' earlier this year. She is also set to appear in 'Midsummer!', a contemporary adaptation of William Shakespeare's 'A Midsummer Night's Dream', which is scheduled to travel to the 2026 Edinburgh Festival Fringe.
