Thug Life, the Tamil action drama starring Kamal Haasan, has officially dropped on Netflix as of July 3, 2025. Despite being touted as one of the most awaited Tamil films of the year, it received mixed reviews from critics and audiences and underperformed at the Indian box office.

The film, directed by Mani Ratnam, was released in theatres on June 5, 2025. Although it was declared one of the highest grossing Tamil movies of the year, it failed to meet its high expectations, given its reported production budget of ₹200–300 crore. Thug Life collected ₹85.5 crore (US$10 million) worldwide, including ₹44.75 crore from India and ₹40.75 crore overseas.

The story follows Rangaraaya “Sakthi” Sakthivel (played by Kamal Haasan), a feared gang leader who adopts a young boy named Amaran. Years later, an assassination attempt leads Sakthivel to suspect betrayal from within—igniting a brutal conflict between father and son figures.

The ensemble cast includes:

Kamal Haasan as Sakthivel

Silambarasan TR as Amaran

Trisha Krishnan as Indhrani

Aishwarya Lekshmi as Dr Anna

Ashok Selvan, Joju George, Nassar, and Abhirami in key roles

Though the film failed to create waves at the box office, its stylish visuals, intense performances, and Mani Ratnam’s signature storytelling are now available for global audiences to stream.
