The heartwarming Malayalam film Home, directed by Rojin Thomas and released directly on OTT in 2021, remains one of the most loved movies in recent times. Featuring a stellar ensemble cast including Indrans, Manju Pillai, Sreenath Bhasi, Naslen, Deepa Thomas, Johny Antony, and Kainakary Thankaraj, the film won wide critical acclaim for its sincere depiction of familial bonds, emotional depth, and social relevance.

In 2023, Home earned the National Film Award for Best Feature Film in Malayalam, further cementing its status as a great film. The performance of Indrans, in particular, was lauded, with the actor receiving a Special Jury Mention for his portrayal of ‘Oliver Twist’. Produced by Vijay Babu, the film resonated with audiences for its universal theme of love, companionship, and ageing in the digital age.

Recently, actor Manju Pillai, who played Indrans' wife in the film, opened up in a candid media interview about how she came on board the project — and the biases that surfaced during the casting process.

“Home was my second innings in cinema. Vijay Babu, a close family friend, called me about the role during a time when work had slowed down (referring to the pandemic period), and I was beginning to focus on farming,” she shared. “When I agreed, he hesitantly asked if I was okay playing opposite Indrans. Apparently, a couple of others had declined the role because they were uncomfortable being cast as his wife.”

Manju Pillai firmly dismissed any such concerns. “Why would that be a problem? I focus on my character — not who I’m cast opposite,” she asserted.

Her statement casts light on the lingering stereotypes and superficial expectations that still plague casting decisions in Malayalam cinema. At the same time, it highlights her professionalism and dedication to her craft — qualities that have defined her career since the early 1990s.
