After 16 years since it was filmed, Swapnamalika, the first film penned by Malayalam superstar Mohanlal, is finally preparing for a theatrical release. Directed by late Adv K A Devarajan and starring Mohanlal himself in the lead role, the long-delayed film is expected to hit cinemas in October this year.
Swapnamalika is based on Tharpanam, a short story written by Mohanlal years ago. The screenplay was adapted by S Suresh Babu, with the film originally shot with high expectations. However, following the completion of filming, unforeseen issues stalled its release indefinitely—until now.
In the film, Mohanlal plays Dr Appu Nair, an oncologist who travels to Varanasi to immerse his father’s ashes. There, he meets Radha Carmel, a foreigner portrayed by Israeli actress Eleena. Their unexpected encounter and the events that follow form the emotional core of the story.
The film also boasts an ensemble cast featuring late Thilakan, Innocent and Sukumari besides Urmila Unni, Kottayam Nazeer, Saju Kodiyan, Kulappulli Leela, Shivani and Vidya among others. The music has been composed by Rajamani and Jayakishan, with lyrics penned by Aparna, the director’s daughter.
Though the film's production wrapped years ago, creative changes made to the script and other disputes caused indefinite delays. Sadly, director Devarajan passed away in April last year and will not witness his long-awaited film finally reaching the audience.
After years of anticipation, Swapnamalika is now poised to offer fans a glimpse into Mohanlal’s creative storytelling and marks a nostalgic return to a project that had once seemed lost in time.
