Kochi: Music director Stephen Devassy is all set to launch his ambitious new venture, SD Scapes Studio, which aspires to become Kerala’s largest indoor studio. The grand opening will take place this Saturday, with Industries Minister P Rajeev inaugurating the facility at 11 am. The celebrations will continue into the evening with a special appearance by actor Mohanlal, who will join as the chief guest along with other prominent figures from the film industry.

Located in North Kalamassery’s Sundaragiri, SD Scapes Studio is poised to become one of South India’s most expansive and advanced indoor studio complexes. Developed by renowned music director Stephen Devassy, the studio boasts state-of-the-art infrastructure and versatile facilities, including parking space for over 400 vehicles.

SD Scapes features two major studio units — one in Ottapalam and the other in Sundaragiri. Both have been designed to cater to a wide spectrum of activities beyond film production, including television serials, live shows, fashion events, musical concerts, grand wedding receptions, corporate gatherings, and other entertainment-related events.

The Ottapalam studio stands out with a fully air-conditioned interior that offers seating for over 3,000 people, making it ideal for large-scale events. Meanwhile, the Sundaragiri studio includes an integrated stage and seating for more than 800, along with green rooms, a canteen and additional amenities to support seamless production workflows.

With a built-up area of 17,000 square feet, the Ottapalam studio is engineered with cutting-edge technical features. Measuring 147 feet in length, 120 feet in width and a height of 40 feet, it is designed to accommodate professional rigging, with walls that can support equipment loads up to 25 kg. The venue also includes a dedicated catwalk ramp, making it ideal for fashion shows and televised events.

“The idea came to me during the COVID period — a time when many of us were forced to reflect and adapt,” said Stephen Devassy, founder of SD Scapes. “I wanted to create a new source of income, but more importantly, I aimed to build something that would genuinely contribute to the industry. Along the way, I was fortunate to have the support of many — talented technicians from our own industry, insightful business minds and visionary investors. With their belief and backing, the idea began to take shape. It ultimately took three years to bring the project to life — a journey of perseverance, passion, and shared purpose,” Stephen Devassy told Mathrubhumi English.

Designed with convenience and efficiency in mind, the studio features direct truck access, five makeup rooms, a private suite, nine washrooms, a dedicated store room, a spacious lobby and a pre-function area — all aimed at supporting a smooth filming or event experience.

With SD Scapes, Kerala's film and entertainment industry gains a modern, high-capacity hub that reduces the need for production units to seek facilities outside the state. The studio represents a significant step forward in creating self-sustained infrastructure for the creative economy in the region.
