Diwali 2024 is set to be a thrilling occasion for Bollywood fans, as two highly anticipated films, 'Singham Again' and 'Bhool Bhulaiyaa 3', are gearing up for a box office showdown on the same day. The festive season, typically considered an auspicious time for movie releases, will witness a clash of titans as Ajay Devgn's action-packed sequel and Kartik Aaryan's horror-comedy reboot vie for audience attention on November 1.
While both films boast an impressive star cast and are ready for the clash, it is not the first time that Bollywood is witnessing a box office battle on Diwali. We bring you some of the biggest Diwali clashes that the Hindi film industry has witnessed in the recent years.
‘Ram Setu’ v/s ‘Thank God’
Release date: October 25, 2022
Starring Akshay Kumar in the leading role, director Abhishke Sharma’s ‘Ram Setu’ was released in theatres on Diwali 2022. The film clashed with Sidharth Malhotra and Ajay Devgn-led ‘Thank God.’ While Akshay’s movie is an action-adventure film, ‘Thank God’ is director Indra Kumar’s fantasy-comedy drama. Both movies failed to attract the audiences, and were commercial failures. ‘Ram Setu’ managed to earn Rs. 92.94 crore and the collections for ‘Thank God’ stood at Rs. 48.92 crore.
‘Secret Superstar’ v/s Golmaal Again’
Release Date: October 19, 2017 and October 20, 2017
Released just a day apart, ‘Secret Superstar’ and ‘Golmaal Again’ were one of the highest-grossing films of 2017. The former starred Aamir Khan and Zaira Wasim, while the latter featured an ensemble cast comprising Ajay Devgn, Arshad Warsi, Tusshar Kapoor, Shreyas Talpade, Kunal Kemmu, and others. Made on a small budget of Rs. 15 crore, ‘Secret Superstar’ became one of the most profitable films of all time by earning over Rs. 900 crore. On the other hand, ‘Golmaal Again’ minted Rs. 310.98 crore against its reported budget of Rs. 70 crore.
‘Ae Dil Hai Mushkil’ v/s ‘Shivaay’

One of the biggest clashes that Bollywood witnessed in the recent years on the occasion of Diwali, was that of Karan Johar’s ‘Ae Dil Hai Mushkil’ and Ajay’s second directorial venture, ‘Shivaay.’ Not only did the films have a tough fight at the box office, but it also led to differences between Karan and Ajay. As per reports, Ajay had accused Karan of paying Rs. 25 lakh to self-claimed critic Kamaal R Khan to belittle ‘Shivaay’ on social media. As far as the collections of the two movies are concerned, ‘Ae Dil Hai Mushkil’ outperformed ‘Shivaay’ by earning around Rs. 240 crore while ‘Shivaay’ earned Rs. 149 crore.
‘Jab Tak Hai Jaan’ v/s ‘Son Of Sardar’
Release date: November 13, 2012
Late filmmaker Yash Chopra’s last directorial, ‘Jab Tak Hai Jaan’ was a huge commercial success. It was released in cinema halls on the same day as Ashwni Dhir’s ‘Son of Sardar.’ While the former featured Shah Rukh Khan, Anushka Sharma, and Katrina Kaif, the latter starred Ajay, Sanjay Dutt, Juhi Chawla, and Sonakshi Sinha. Both films fared well at the box office with Chopra’s movie earning over Rs. 235 crore and ‘Dhir’s ‘Son of Sardar’ minted Rs. 161.48 crore.
