Filmmaker Sanjay Gupta, known for directing ‘Kaante’, ‘Shootout At Lokhandwala’ and ‘Shootout At Wadala’, has passed away at 59.

Hindi cinema has lost a filmmaker known for his distinctive take on crime dramas, stylised action and gritty Mumbai stories. Director and producer Sanjay Gupta, best remembered for films such as ‘Kaante’ and ‘Shootout At Lokhandwala’, has passed away. According to Film Information, Gupta died on October 30, 2026, after reportedly suffering a fall in his bathroom. Further details about the circumstances surrounding his death are awaited.
Over a career spanning several decades, Gupta carved out a distinct space in mainstream Hindi cinema with stories rooted in crime, gang rivalries and the underbelly of Mumbai. His filmmaking style, marked by slick visuals, dramatic action sequences and ensemble casts, gave audiences some memorable commercial entertainers.
One of his most recognised collaborations was with actor Sanjay Dutt. The duo worked together on films including ‘Kaante’ (2002), ‘Musafir’ (2004), ‘Zinda’ (2006) and ‘Shootout At Lokhandwala’ (2007). The latter, which Gupta also produced and co-wrote, recreated the 1991 Lokhandwala Complex shootout and became one of his defining directorial projects.
He continued exploring the crime genre with ‘Shootout At Wadala’ (2013), featuring John Abraham, Anil Kapoor and Kangana Ranaut. Gupta also ventured into different storytelling territories with ‘Jazbaa’ (2015), starring Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, and ‘Kaabil’ (2017), featuring Hrithik Roshan and Yami Gautam.
His filmography also included the anthology ‘Dus Kahaniyaan’ (2007), ‘Acid Factory’ (2009) and ‘Mumbai Saga’ (2021), starring John Abraham and Emraan Hashmi. Beyond direction, Gupta established White Feather Films in 2001 and backed several projects as a producer.
