“Maybe we are poor, coolies, trolley-pullers. But, we are not beggars”. The iconic dialogue from ‘Angadi’ (1980) still rings in the minds of Malayalis immortalising Jayan, the first action hero of Mollywood.
Today marks Jayan’s 42nd death anniversary. The actor died during the shooting of a stunt scene for the movie ‘Kolilakkam’ at the age of 41.
Born in present day Kollam, Jayan has acted in more than 100 films and is widely regarded as one of the most popular superstars in the history of Malayalam cinema.
The golden era of Jayan gifted Malayalis numerous superhit movies, such as ‘Kannappanunni’ (1977), ‘Lisa’ (1978), ‘Sarapancharam’ (1979), ‘Love in Singapore’ (1980), ‘Karimbana’ (1980) among others.
