Ranbir Kapoor opened up about the responsibility of playing Lord Rama in Nitesh Tiwari’s ‘Ramayana’ at San Diego Comic-Con 2026.

Ranbir Kapoor’s first appearance at San Diego Comic-Con came with a confession about one of the biggest roles of his career. The actor said he initially felt fear and self-doubt when he was offered the role of Lord Rama in Nitesh Tiwari’s ‘Ramayana’. At the same event, he revealed that the much-awaited epic will hold another special place in his family as daughter Raha Kapoor’s first film on the big screen.
Ranbir Kapoor says he felt ‘fear’ before playing Lord Rama
Speaking about taking on the role, Ranbir recalled the uncertainty he felt when the project was first offered to him. He questioned whether he was capable of portraying a figure as significant as Lord Rama.
The actor said that the initial fear and doubt soon turned into gratitude. For Ranbir, the role became both a blessing and a responsibility because of the deep place the Ramayana occupies in Indian culture.
He also spoke about the values associated with Lord Rama and the need for the film to approach the story with sincerity. Ranbir said portraying the character required faith, belief, truthfulness and noble intentions from the entire team.
‘Ramayana’ will be Raha Kapoor’s first movie in theatres
During the Comic-Con panel, Ranbir was asked about children watching the film and connecting with the story and its cultural significance. The actor then shared a personal detail about his daughter.

Ranbir said he is excited to take Raha to watch ‘Ramayana’, adding that it will be her first film on the big screen.
The revelation adds a personal layer to the actor’s association with the ambitious project, which is being mounted on a scale rarely seen in Indian cinema.

The actor acknowledged that the epic has been adapted across generations through radio, television, theatre and films. According to him, every version brings its own interpretation to a story that has remained relevant for centuries.
Ranbir said that while technology and scale are important to Nitesh Tiwari’s version, the emotional and spiritual core of the Ramayana remains central to the film.

The film stars Ranbir Kapoor as Lord Rama, Sai Pallavi, and Yash who plays Ravana. During the San Diego Comic-Con presentation, Yash also spoke about the project and praised Ranbir, while the cast and team shared details about the much-awaited adaptation.
‘Ramayana’ trailer release postponed
The film’s trailer was expected to be unveiled globally on July 24 after the Comic-Con presentation. However, producer Namit Malhotra later announced that the launch had been postponed following the project’s international distribution partnership with Sony Pictures Entertainment.
The trailer will now be released globally at a later date.
Directed by Nitesh Tiwari, ‘Ramayana’ is scheduled to release during Diwali 2026.
