Following the resignation of Director Ranjith as chairman of the Kerala Chalachitra Academy, there are strong indications that Prem Kumar, the academy's current vice chairman, will step in as the interim chairman. He has served as vice chairman since 2022 following Beena Paul's resignation.

Ranjith's resignation comes in the wake of serious allegations made by Bengali actress Sreelekha Mitra. The Culture Minister, Saji Cherian, had initially stated that action would be contingent upon a written complaint, but the gravity of the allegations led to widespread calls from academy members and film industry people for Ranjith’s resignation.

The move also comes amid heightened scrutiny of the film industry following the resignation of Siddique, General Secretary of the Association of Malayalam Movie Artistes (AMMA), over similar serious allegations. Siddique has faced accusations of sexual harassment from an actress, which has further intensified the focus on how such issues are handled within the industry.
