Rumours about One Piece approaching its anime end have intensified following the death of acclaimed series director Tatsuya Nagamine at the age of 53

One Piece, anime fans were left stunned as rumours of the anime nearing its conclusion intensified following the discussion on death of veteran director Tatsuya Nagamine at the age of 53.
News of his passing circulated after @pewpiece on X reported that Nagamine died earlier this summer, with a memorial service held on 13 November 2025 at Toei Animation Studios in Oizumi. The cause of death has not been disclosed.
Nagamine was regarded as one of the most influential creative forces behind One Piece and Dragon Ball, known especially for transforming the Wano arc into one of the most visually ambitious chapters in the franchise’s history. His direction brought brighter colour palettes, smoother animation, and cinematic camera work that redefined the look and feel of the long-running anime.
He took over as series director in mid-2019, just as the Wano arc began, and his stylistic overhaul quickly became a hallmark of the anime’s renewed popularity. Fans often credit him for elevating One Piece during a critical phase, helping it reach a new generation of viewers. Nagamine continued to lead the series through Wano and into the early Egghead arc before stepping down in April 2025.
His sudden death has resurfaced long-running speculation about how close the anime is to its final chapters. The Egghead arc itself is reaching its climax, with Episode 1121 marking the explosive start of the finale on 30 November 2025. Key moments include Vegapunk’s global message, intense battles involving the Straw Hats, and a central role for Jewelry Bonney as the Five Elders close in.
After Egghead concludes, the anime will shift to a new seasonal format, pausing for three months before returning in April 2026 with the long-awaited Elbaf arc. The updated production model—two cours per year totalling roughly 26 episodes—is designed to improve pacing and align more closely with Eiichiro Oda’s manga progression.
Elbaf is expected to dive into major mysteries teased for decades, from the history of the giants to long-foreshadowed character arcs. The timing also coincides with Netflix’s live-action Season 2, which features Elbaf-related characters, as well as Wit Studio’s manga-faithful One Piece remake currently in development.
While there is no official confirmation that One Piece is ending soon, Nagamine’s passing has prompted renewed reflection among fans about the anime’s future direction. His work—especially on Wano—remains one of the most celebrated eras in the franchise’s three-decade run.
