The series, starring Siddharth and others, highlights the IAF's pioneering high-altitude aerial combat and its success in deterring conflict, marking a significant chapter in military aviation history

India’s military history is rich with stories of extraordinary bravery, strategic brilliance, and unwavering devotion to the motherland. From the icy heights of the Himalayas to the deserts and the seas, the Indian armed forces have fought countless battles that continue to inspire generations and ignite patriotic pride.
Over time, cinema and streaming platforms have brought many of these heroic moments to life, offering audiences a deeper look into the sacrifices and triumphs that shaped the nation.
Now, Netflix India is set to spotlight one such chapter of courage and aviation excellence. The streaming giant has unveiled the teaser of its much-anticipated series ‘Operation Safed Sagar’, a gripping retelling of the Indian Air Force’s daring 1999 mission during the Kargil War.
Starring Siddharth, Jimmy Shergill, Abhay Verma, Mihir Ahuja, Taaruk Raina, Arnav Bhasin, and more, the series is slated for release in 2026. With the first look creating a buzz, here’s a deep dive into the real-life operation that inspired the show.
‘Operation Safed Sagar’ completed 26 years in May
Conducted by the IAF, Operation Safed Sagar was the codename for the air operations that were held during the Kargil War. It was launched on May 26, 1999, and the purpose of the operation was to support the ground forces under Operation Vijay.
Earlier this year, the IAF celebrated the 26th anniversary of the successful operation, which aimed at flushing out Pakistani intruders who had occupied the Indian posts in the Kargil sector.
During its 26th-year celebrations, the IAF, in a social media post, said that it “was the first large-scale use of air power in the Kashmir region since the 1971 Indo-Pak War.”
“Never before had an air force been tasked with such high-altitude prevision operations in rugged mountainous terrain -- making it a watershed moment in military aviation history,” further read the IAF’s post.
Aircraft that were used during ‘Operation Safed Sagar’
According to the IAF, several fighter jets that were used for the operations included the Mirage 2000s, MiG 21s, Mi 17s, MiG 27s, MiG 23s, Chetak, Jaguars, and MiG 29s.
Furthermore, the operation was called a ‘trailblazer’ in many ways by the IAF. It also successfully “shattered the long-held notion that use of air power would inevitably escalate into full-scale war”.
As per the IAF's post, the operation successfully “established the deterrent value of calibrated air strikes even in a low-intensity conflict”.
The Kargil War was fought over three months from May to July. Under Operation Vijay, India reclaimed its peaks occupied by the Pakistani troops and terrorists and regained its control in Kargil on July 26, which is since then known as ‘Kargil Vijay Diwas’.
