Sona Nair, who portrayed a memorable character in the 2005 Malayalam film Naran, shared her thoughts on the role and the changes made to it during editing. Directed by Joshiy and written by Ranjan Pramod, Naran starred Mohanlal in the lead, with an ensemble cast including Madhu, Siddique, and Bhavana.

In a candid interview with Movie World Media, Sona reflected on how her portrayal of ‘Kunnummal Shantha’ was altered during post-production, affecting the character's full potential. While she noted that the role was initially shot with great depth, the final version shown in theatres lacked much of that richness due to cuts made during editing.

"There was a completeness to the character of Shantha during the shoot, but when the film was released, that completeness was lost. Certain aspects of the introduction, the way the character was portrayed, and the ending were much stronger originally," Sona explained. "But when the film reached the theatres, these elements were not as impactful."

Despite this, Sona remains grateful for the opportunity to play the character and for the positive feedback from audiences. "Even though I never felt I did anything extraordinary with my performance, people still talk about the character, and I am thankful for that," she said.

Reflecting on her role in the context of Joshiy’s direction, Sona added, "We gave the director what he needed, as any good actor would. Joshiy was clear about his vision, and I worked to fulfill that vision." However, she did express a lingering sense of disappointment. "I still feel some sadness about the scenes that were cut. Some beautifully crafted moments that showcased Shantha's true character were lost in editing, and that's a source of personal regret."

However, Sona acknowledged the lasting impression the role had on audiences, even though she feels that the final portrayal was not as complete as it could have been. "What you saw in the film was not exactly what was intended during the shoot. There’s still a small sense of disappointment inside me," she admitted.

Sona Nair's reflection reveals the bittersweet journey of an actor in the industry.

The movie Naran was both a commercial and critical success and was regarded as a comeback for Mohanlal after a string of flops. His portrayal of ‘Mullankolli Velayudhan’ is still beloved by audiences, with the film’s songs becoming chartbusters. Naran continues to shine as a landmark movie in the versatile actor’s legendary career. (With inputs from Agencies)
