A team of cops and their tale of unity, spirit and perseverance has been winning hearts in theatres across Kerala for the past few days. The Mammootty-starrer ‘Kannur Squad’ is getting lauded not just for its realistic portrayals, but also for its genuine storytelling. 

Yet, how many of us know about the real Kannur Squad, on whose story the movie is inspired from? The film itself is an adaptation of a true incident that took place in Kerala. Let’s get a glimpse of the tale, shall we? 

The Real Kannur Squad 

‘Kannur Squad’ is an investigative team of police officers who unravelled mysteries behind several crimes and nabbed culprits from inside and outside Kerala over a decade spanning from 2007 till 2017. The team comprised senior civil police officers P Vinod Kumar, K Manoj Kumar, Rafi Muhammad, CK Rajasekharan, C Sunil Kumar, Reji Scaria and K Jayarajan, who were led by Baby George, additional sub inspector.  

On August 4, 2013, a tragic incident took place at the residence of an industrialist, Abdul Salam Haji,a native of Kasaragod. A gang of robbers broke into his home around 11 pm, attacked his family and began looting their gold and money. Finally, on realising that no more money can be obtained from the house, they killed Haji and fled the place. 

The murder, which took place at a house equipped with modern security facilities including CCTV cameras among others, came as a shocker for the state. Following this, an adventurous mission was undertaken by the Kannur Squad and the accused were nabbed from 6000 kilometres away from the crime scene. 

Though inspired from this incident, the film has incorporated several other elements and new changes to offer an intense, roller-coaster ride for the viewers. Yet, the realistic performances never fail to amaze those awaiting a heart-pounding thriller.   

‘Kannur Squad’, helmed by Roby Varghese Raj, hit the theatres on September 28. The investigation thriller has been censored with U/A certification. It also features Kishore Kumar, Vijayaraghavan, Azees Nedumangad, Sabareesh, Manoj KU and Rony David among others in significant roles.
