Bollywood actress Sujata Mehta has revealed that legendary stars Sridevi and Mithun Chakraborty were once involved in a deep romantic relationship. She shared this insight during a conversation on a YouTube channel. Mehta also revealed the emotional toll this breakup took on Sridevi, although the actress managed to maintain a professional front in front of the camera.
Sujata recalled, "They were madly in love with each other. When their relationship ended, Sridevi was clearly distressed, but she remained highly professional. As soon as the camera rolled, she was completely focused. However, once the shot was over, she would silently sit in a corner."
The affair between Mithun Chakraborty and Sridevi reportedly began on the sets of Jaag Utha Insan. Allegedly, they secretly married in 1985, though the relationship remained hidden until 1988. It is believed the relationship continued in secrecy for three years. Mithun had married Yogeeta Bali in 1979, and the couple had two children.
In 1987, things began to change when Boney Kapoor became close to Sridevi. Subsequently, Mithun’s wife found out about his secret relationship, which led to a rift between Mithun and Boney. This eventually led to the end of Sridevi and Mithun's relationship in 1988.
During this period, their alleged relationship became one of the most talked-about topics in Bollywood, though neither Sridevi nor Mithun ever publicly confirmed or explained it. When questioned about the rumours, Mithun had once stated, "Some of the rumours are true, some are false," but he never elaborated further.
This revelation sheds new light on a chapter of Bollywood history that had remained largely behind closed doors for decades.
