Kochi: Breaking a seven-year hiatus since their critically acclaimed police drama ‘Unda’, megastar Mammootty and director Khalid Rahman have officially reunited for their next big-screen outing. The actor took to X at 6.00 pm on Friday to personally unveil the title and first-look poster of the project, titled ‘Mattancherry Mafia’.

Sharing the ornate title design, Mammootty wrote: “Excited to present the title poster of my second collaboration with Khalid Rahman - #MattancherryMafia.”

A generational power-shift

While plot details are being kept under wraps, the film is already being hailed as a "banger" due to its explosive casting. Joining the veteran superstar are two of Malayalam cinema's most bankable contemporary talents: Asif Ali and Naslen.

The inclusion of Naslen, who recently tasted success with Khalid Rahman’s Alappuzha Gymkhana, and the versatile Asif Ali suggests a high-octane crossover of different eras of Malayalam stardom.

The Technical A-team

The title poster also confirmed a heavyweight technical lineup. The film is scripted by Niyog Krishna, along with the hit-making duo Sharfu-Suhas and Thasreeq Abdul Salam.

In a move that has music fans buzzing, the film features a dual-force soundtrack: Rex Vijayan is set to compose the songs, while the "hit machine" Sushin Shyam will handle the background score. Jimshi Khalid returns as the Director of Photography, with Noufal Abdullah on editing duties.

High stakes for 2026

Following the massive success of Unda, which saw Mammootty playing a grounded, vulnerable police officer, the title Mattancherry Mafia suggests a shift toward a grittier, urban landscape in the historic heart of Kochi.

Produced by Khalid Rahman himself, the project is positioned as one of the most anticipated releases of 2026, promising to blend the director's signature realistic style with the raw energy of an underworld thriller.
