
Two classic Malayalam films are celebrating major anniversaries today. It has been 60 years since Bhargavi Nilayam, featuring the iconic character Bhargavikutty, first graced the silver screen. The film was released on October 22, 1964, and is remembered for its haunting story, which was based on a screenplay by the celebrated writer Vaikom Muhammad Basheer, who adapted his own story, Neelavelicham.
Produced by T. K. Pareekutty for Chandrathara Productions and directed by A. Vincent, Bhargavi Nilayam starred prominent actors like Madhu, Vijayanirmala, Prem Nazeer, Adoor Bhasi, and P. J. Antony. The film is notable for being the first ghost story in Malayalam cinema, captivating audiences with its unique narrative and stunning visuals.

October 22 also marks the 70th anniversary of Neelakkuyil, directed by P. Bhaskaran, a film that played a crucial role in putting Malayalam cinema on the national map. Released on October 22, 1954, Neelakkuyil was also produced by T. K. Pareekutty for Chandrathara Productions. The screenplay was crafted by the renowned writer Uroob, and the film starred Sathyan and Miss Kumari in leading roles. This groundbreaking film is fondly remembered for its rich storytelling and memorable songs.
