During the 1980s, Latha shone as a playback singer, lending her voice to several songs

Latha Rajinikanth, the wife of legendary actor Rajinikanth, has quietly yet significantly carved out an identity of her own in the fields of music, cinema, and education. Born as Latha Rangachari on 2 March 1958 in Chennai, she graduated with a degree in English literature from Ethiraj College for Women.
A Melodious Contribution to Tamil Cinema
During the 1980s, Latha emerged as a playback singer, lending her voice to a number of Tamil films, including Tik Tik Tik (1981) and Anbulla Rajinikanth (1984).
A Rare On-Screen Appearance
While her name is most closely associated with music and family life, Latha did briefly step in front of the camera. She played a role in Agni Sakshi (1982), a Tamil psychological drama directed by K. Balachander. The film starred Sivakumar and Saritha, and also featured cameo appearances by Rajinikanth and Kamal Haasan.
Deep Roots in the Arts
Art runs in Latha’s family. Her brother, Ravi Raghavendra, is a seasoned actor, and her nephew, Anirudh Ravichander (Ravi’s son), is a prominent music composer in the Indian film industry. She also shares family ties with noted dramatist and actor Y. Gee. Mahendra and veteran actor Vyjayanthimala.
A Wonderful Love Story
Her journey with Rajinikanth began in 1980, when she interviewed him for her college magazine. He was filming for Thillu Mullu at that time. That brief meeting sparked a relationship that eventually led to marriage. The two tied the knot on 26 February 1981 at Tirupati Balaji Temple. They are parents to two daughters, Aishwarya and Soundarya, both of whom have made strides in the film and creative industries.
Championing Education
Away from the limelight, Latha has dedicated herself to the cause of education. In 1991, she founded The Ashram, a school in Chennai committed to holistic learning.
Latha Rajinikanth’s life is a testimony to her versatility — balancing art, family, and public service with equal grace. Though often associated with her superstar husband, her own quiet legacy stands strong, rooted in creativity, compassion, and commitment.
