The much-loved sweet treat is deeply embedded in the cultural and culinary fabric of Malabar.

Known for its clever and often cheeky social media presence, Kerala Tourism has once again tickled the internet’s funny bone. On Saturday, the department shared a light-hearted post that has amused netizens far and wide, just as the much-anticipated Superman film, directed by James Gunn, continues to soar at the global box office.
With Superman receiving largely positive reviews and David Corenswet donning the iconic red cape for the first time, the film has been lauded for its high-octane action and visual splendour. Amidst all the global fanfare, Kerala Tourism decided to give the superhero a local twist — and it’s delightfully hilarious.
The star of this latest online escapade? None other than Kozhikode halwa, the much-loved sweet treat deeply embedded in the cultural and culinary fabric of Malabar. For visitors to Kozhikode (also known as Calicut), buying halwa — available in a rainbow of colours and flavours — is almost a sacred tradition. A box of this rich, gooey delight is often taken home as a prized souvenir.
In a tongue-in-cheek nod to Superman's Achilles’ heel — Kryptonite — the post features an image of the Man of Steel looking utterly helpless in front of a glowing green box of halwa. The caption reads:
“Kozhikode halwa. You are powerless to resist.”
Comic book fans and sweet-toothed travellers alike found the joke irresistible. For those in the know, Superman’s strength famously wanes in the presence of Kryptonite — typically depicted as a glowing green mineral. Kerala Tourism’s humorous substitution of Kryptonite with luminous green halwa struck a sweet chord, quite literally.
Social media users praised the post for its timely creativity, especially as cinema-goers around the world flock to theatres to witness Superman’s latest adventure.
