Kim Kardashian has addressed the criticism around an Instagram post that appeared just before her family announced the death of her grandmother, Mary Jo "MJ" Shannon.

The reality star came under fire after sharing photos from a family lakeside holiday, with several social media users questioning the timing of the upload. As the comments grew, Kim stepped in to explain what had happened.

"This post was scheduled a few days ago before we lost MJ, so its timing came right alongside her passing," Kim wrote in the comments. "I've been by my mom and grandma's side this past week, and my heart is completely with my family right now. We love and miss her so deeply, and in the days ahead, we'll be focusing on celebrating her beautiful life."

The Instagram carousel, captioned "Lake Life," featured Kim enjoying time with her family. The photos showed her posing with Khloé Kardashian on a boat, wakeboarding on the lake, spending time with her children, and Kendall Jenner playfully pouring tequila into her mouth while she balanced on a paddleboard.

Only minutes after the post went live, Kris Jenner announced that her mother, Mary Jo "MJ" Shannon, had died at the age of 91. Calling her "the heart of our family," Kris shared an emotional tribute, saying her mother had taught the family to love deeply, be kind and cherish every moment together.

Later, Kim posted a separate tribute dedicated to MJ, sharing photographs from different stages of their lives together. She described her grandmother as "my best friend, my gossip buddy, my forever twin" and credited her for teaching the family the value of staying close while also showing her what it meant to be a hardworking businesswoman.

Hours after the family's tributes, Formula 1 champion Lewis Hamilton also shared personal photos and videos from the same lakeside getaway. His post included moments of Kim hugging him before pulling him into the water, along with another image of the pair walking arm in arm. He captioned the post with a simple message: "hold your people close".

Mary Jo "MJ" Shannon was a familiar face to fans of Keeping Up with the Kardashians and The Kardashians, where she frequently appeared alongside her family. She also founded the San Diego children's boutique Shannon & Co. Before marrying Harry Shannon, she was married to Robert Houghton, with whom she had Kris Jenner. Harry Shannon died in a car accident in 2003 after the couple had been together for four decades.

MJ is survived by Kris Jenner and her family. Her younger daughter, Karen Houghton, died in March 2024 following cardiac arrest at the age of 65.
