Thiruvananthapuram: In a massive win, Mammootty bagged the 53rd Kerala State Film Award for Best Actor for his role in Lijo Jose Pellissery’s ‘Nanpakal Nerathu Mayakkam’. Vincy Aloshious clinched the award for the best actress for her performance in ‘Rekha’, directed by Jithin Issac Thomas.

‘Nanpakal Nerathu Mayakkam’ was bestowed the award for Best Film and Mahesh Narayanan was named the Best Director for the film ‘Ariyippu’.

The awards were announced by Kerala Minister for Cultural Affairs Saji Cheriyan around 3 pm at the PR chamber in Thiruvananthapuram. The event began after paying respects to former Kerala Chief Minister Oommen Chandy, who passed away on Tuesday.

This year, the winners were selected from a pool of 154 movies. Noted Bengali filmmaker and screenplay writer Gautam Ghosh is the jury chairman. Of these, eight are children’s movies. Around 49 films reportedly made it into the final round. 

The award function, originally scheduled on Wednesday, was postponed on account of the three-day mourning declared by the Kerala government following the demise of Oommen Chandy.
