Karthik Subbaraj’s Dorothy has made a strong start at TIFF 2026. The Keerthy Suresh starrer received a standing ovation following its world premiere in Toronto

Karthik Subbaraj’s Dorothy has received a warm response at its world premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF). The Tamil film was screened in the Centrepiece section, with the audience giving the cast and crew a standing ovation after the screening. It is also the first Tamil feature in a decade to have its world premiere at the prestigious festival.
Videos from the premiere at Scotiabank Theatre have since surfaced online, showing the film’s team taking the stage after the end credits. Keerthy Suresh, Sananth and Rishikanth were present along with producers Guneet Monga Kapoor and Achin Jain and director Karthik Subbaraj. The team received loud applause from the audience as they appeared on stage.
Karthik Subbaraj On Taking ‘Dorothy’ To TIFF
Dorothy marks Subbaraj’s 10th feature as a director. The filmmaker has said the film is a story he has carried with him for a long time, drawing from a world and culture he knows closely.
Speaking about the film’s TIFF premiere, Subbaraj said he wanted to explore themes including identity, caste, masculinity and compassion through its characters rather than relying on spectacle. While the story is rooted in Tamil Nadu, he believes its emotional core can connect with audiences beyond the region.
The film’s story had largely been kept under wraps ahead of its festival premiere. However, earlier material around the film has indicated that friendship, violence, love and difficult relationships form part of its world. Dorothy is set against rural Tamil Nadu and follows characters whose lives are shaped by their circumstances and relationships.
Keerthy Suresh leads the cast
Keerthy Suresh plays the titular character, with Sananth and Rishikanth also in key roles. The film is written and directed by Karthik Subbaraj and is produced by Jyoti Deshpande, Guneet Monga Kapoor and Achin Jain, in association with Dhammam Films. It is presented by Jio Studios and Sikhya Entertainment.
One of the film’s biggest talking points is its music. Legendary composer Ilaiyaraaja has created the original score for Dorothy, marking his 1,540th film as a music director.
‘Dorothy’ to release in September
The TIFF premiere comes shortly before the film’s theatrical release. Dorothy is scheduled to arrive in cinemas worldwide on September 25, 2026.
After the strong response in Toronto, the film now heads towards its theatrical release with considerable attention around its cast, themes and Ilaiyaraaja’s music.
