Bollywood actress, Kangana Ranaut’s latest political drama, 'Emergency', which premiered on an OTT platform last week, has been receiving widespread attention and praise from both audiences and industry insiders alike. The film, which depicts the controversial 21-month Emergency period imposed by former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi in 1975, has ignited conversations on social media, especially with its bold portrayal of historical events.
Kangana, who both directed and produced the film, has been actively sharing audience reactions and reviews on her social media handles. One such review, from a viewer who suggested that 'Emergency' should be India’s official entry for the Oscars, caught the actress’s attention. The tweet read, "#EmergencyOnNetflix should go for the Oscars from India. Kangana, what a film."

However, Kangana was quick to dismiss the idea, offering a pointed response. "But America wouldn’t like to acknowledge its real face—how they bully, suppress, and arm-twist developing nations. It’s been exposed in 'Emergency'. They can keep their silly Oscar. We have National Awards," she wrote. This response reflects Kangana’s stance on the international recognition of her work and her focus on domestic appreciation.
Alongside the audience’s praise, the film has also garnered support from notable figures in the film industry. Veteran filmmaker Sanjay Gupta took to social media to commend Kangana’s work in 'Emergency'. Gupta admitted that he had initially misjudged the film but was pleasantly surprised after watching it. Kangana responded to Gupta’s kind words with gratitude, thanking him for breaking the barriers of preconceived notions within the industry.
Emergency, which was released on January 17, features a stellar ensemble cast including Anupam Kher, Shreyas Talpade, Mahima Chaudhry, Milind Soman, Satish Kaushik, and Darshan Pandya in pivotal roles. The film is jointly produced by Zee Studios and Manikarnika Films.
