Amid reports that playback singer Kalpana Raghavendar attempted suicide, her daughter, Daya Prasad Prabhakar, has dismissed the claims, stating that her mother was hospitalised due to an accidental overdose caused by stress. Kalpana is currently receiving treatment at a private hospital in Hyderabad.

What did her daughter say?
Kalpana’s daughter clarified that her mother did not attempt suicide but mistakenly took an overdose of medication prescribed for insomnia. She explained that Kalpana has been balancing multiple responsibilities, including her singing career and studies for an LLB and PhD, which led to sleep deprivation. She further stated that the overdose was unintentional and not a suicide attempt, as some reports suggested.

Following the incident, Kalpana’s husband, Prasad Prabhakar, travelled to Hyderabad. Several well-known singers have also visited her in hospital.

What have the police said?
Kalpana, who resides in the Vertex Pre-Village gated community in Nizampet, had not been seen for two days, raising concerns among security staff. The building association contacted her husband in Chennai after repeated unsuccessful attempts to reach her. The police were alerted, and a patrol team entered her home, where they found her unconscious. She was immediately taken to hospital.

Police confirmed that she had taken an overdose of tablets but noted that investigations were ongoing to determine whether it was intentional. Police officials said they were yet to establish if it was a suicide attempt.
