Chennai: Veteran actor Kamal Haasan has come under fire following a comment he made about actor Trisha during a promotional event for their upcoming film Thug Life, directed by Mani Ratnam. The incident, captured on video and widely circulated on social media, has sparked criticism and debate over the nature of the actor’s remarks.
During the event, Trisha was asked about her favourite dish. She responded by saying, “I like all kinds of food, but I especially enjoy a dish made with banana. What’s it called again?” Kamal Haasan, who was seated nearby, interjected with, “She doesn’t know the name, but she likes to eat it,” before adding that the dish she was referring to was likely pazham pori (banana fritters).

Though Trisha appeared to laugh off the comment, Kamal went a step further by lightly tapping her on the knee in what appeared to be an attempt to clarify that his remark was made in jest. Nevertheless, many on social media were quick to criticise the exchange, labelling Haasan’s comment as inappropriate and suggestive.
“Toxic Kamal,” read one user’s blunt reaction, while others questioned whether Trisha would file a complaint, drawing comparisons to past incidents involving other celebrities such as Mansoor Ali Khan. Another user speculated, “What if it had been Telugu superstar Chiranjeevi who made such a comment?”
At the same time, Haasan also received support from fans and netizens who defended his intention, suggesting the remark was clearly meant as a joke. “There was no innuendo or insult. It was humour, albeit poorly worded,” wrote one supporter. Some acknowledged that while the wording was unwise, the actor quickly realised the potential for misunderstanding and attempted to ease the tension.
The event was also attended by Thug Life co-star Silambarasan (Simbu). The film marks a highly anticipated reunion between Kamal Haasan and director Mani Ratnam after nearly four decades, having last worked together in the 1987 cult classic Nayakan.
Thug Life also features Aishwarya Lekshmi, Joju George, Sanya Malhotra, and Nasser in key roles. The music is composed by A.R. Rahman. The film is slated for release in cinemas on 5th June.
