Johnny Depp has officially returned to Hollywood, kicking off filming for his next project, Day Drinker. Lionsgate has unveiled a first-look image of the actor from the film, marking his comeback after a long break and a much-publicised legal battle with ex-wife Amber Heard, reports Variety.
Teaming up with Penélope Cruz again
Directed by Marc Webb — best known for '500 Days of Summer' and 'Snow White' — the film brings Depp and Penélope Cruz together for the fourth time. They’ve previously worked on 'Blow', 'Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides' and Murder on the Orient Express.
Joining them on screen is 'Outer Banks' star Madelyn Cline. The cast also includes Manu Rios, Aron Piper, Juan Diego Botto, and Anika Boyle.
What’s 'Day Drinker' about?
The story follows a private-yacht bartender, played by Cline, who crosses paths with a mysterious guest on board — none other than Depp’s character. Things take a turn when they find themselves wrapped up with a dangerous figure, portrayed by Cruz, and soon discover unexpected links between them all.
Filming in Spain with a blockbuster team
Production is currently underway in Spain. The film is produced by Thunder Road’s Basil Iwanyk and Erica Lee — the names behind the 'John Wick' franchise — alongside Adam Kolbrenner (The Tomorrow War, Prisoners) and Zach Dean, who also wrote the screenplay. Dean and Kolbrenner’s recent project 'The Gorge' was released by Apple TV+/Skydance.
'Day Drinker' is a Thunder Road / IN.2 production, with Lionsgate presenting the film in association with 30WEST. Executive producers include Dan Friedkin, Micah Green, Daniel Steinman, Stephen Deuters, and several others, including director Marc Webb himself.
Director promises a wild ride
“I’m excited to be starting production with Johnny, Madelyn, Penelope, and this incredible cast,” said Webb.
“We’re in a beautiful location with a fantastic crew and a thrilling, ferocious story to tell. This is gonna be fun.”
