When your father is Thalapathy Vijay, the world expects you to follow him in front of the camera. Jason Sanjay has chosen the director's chair instead. With his directorial debut ‘Sigma’ getting ready for release, he opened up about the film, his family and his favourite cinema in a recent interview with Pearle Maaney.

Jason revealed that the first person he narrated ‘Sigma’ to was actor Dulquer Salmaan. The meeting took place over coffee at the Leela Palace Hotel, and Jason remembers it as a wonderful experience.

Dulquer, he said, listened with great patience and did not interrupt even once. Though he did not ask a single question, he seemed to follow every detail of the story. Jason described him as an attentive listener and a keen observer.

The conversation also turned to a question many fans have wondered about: what would Jason bring out in his father if he ever directed him? His answer was not about action or mass moments. He said he would like to show Vijay's fun, innocent and humorous side.
"Audiences once enjoyed him in light-hearted romantic comedies with relatable characters, and while a touch of that humour still appears in his recent films, it is not the same as before. He has a very childlike nature in real life, and when it comes alive on screen, it is very, very cute," Jason said.

Asked whether he would direct or act in a Malayalam film, he said he would love to and is simply waiting for the right opportunity. He called Malayalam cinema home to the best writers in the Indian film industry. He added that with world cinema now easily accessible, audiences no longer see films of different languages as separate from one another.

Among recent films, Jason said he enjoyed Mollywood Times for its relatable portrayal of people working in the film industry. He also praised the work of director Girish A.D.

‘Sigma’ marks Jason Sanjay's debut as a director, with Sundeep Kishan leading the cast alongside Faria Abdullah, Raju Sundaram, Sampath Raj, Shiv Panditt, Anbu Thasan, Yog Japee and Sheela Rajkumar, among others.

Produced by Subaskaran under the Lyca Productions banner, the film blends action, comedy, treasure-hunt and heist elements.

It was initially scheduled to release in July but was later postponed, and is now slated to hit theatres worldwide on October 2, 2026.
