The survival thriller 'Manjummel Boys', scripted and directed by Chidambaram and produced under the banner of Parava Films, has made history in Malayalam cinema, becoming the highest-grossing film in the industry. Released on February 22, 2024, the film has amassed over Rs 240 crore from theatres.
A controversy regarding the use of the song 'Kanmani Anbodu' from the Kamal Haasan film 'Gunaa' has sparked widespread discussion on social media. Despite this, producer Shawn Antony has confirmed that the song was used with proper authorization. The original song, featured in the 1991 film 'Gunaa', had its audio rights sold by Ilayaraja's wife to Pyramid Audios, which later transferred the rights to Music Master and Sri Devi Video Corporation. Parava Films subsequently acquired the Tamil rights from Music Master and the Telugu rights from Sri Devi Video Corporation for use in 'Manjummel Boys'.
“The song, 'Kanmani Anbodu', was used in 'Manjummel Boys' with permission. The rights to the song belong to the music companies Pyramid and Sri Devi Sounds. The song was used in the film after obtaining rights from them. The rights to the song have been bought in all the languages in which 'Manjummel Boys' was released, not only Tamil. No legal notice has been received from Ilaiyaraaja in this regard,” said producer Shawn Antony.
'Manjummel Boys' centres on a group of friends from Manjummel in Kochi travelling to Kodaikanal, encountering unexpected situations along the way. The cast includes Soubin Shahir, Sreenath Bhasi, Balu Varghese, Ganapathi, Lal Jr., Chandu Salimkumar, Abhiram Radhakrishnan, Deepak Parambol, Khalid Rahman, Arun Kurian, and Vishnu Reghu.
The film was produced by Babu Shahir, Soubin Shahir, and Shawn Antony. Parava Films and Sree Gokulam Movies presented the film, with Dream Big Films handling all India distribution for Sree Gokulam Movies and RFT Films acquiring UK distribution rights. The OTT rights are owned by Disney Hotstar.
