Ranjin Raj, a prominent music composer in the Malayalam film industry, recently opened up about an interesting incident involving one of the region's best singers, M.G. Sreekumar. In an interview with One2Talks, Raj revealed that despite composing the music for a film in which Sreekumar was supposed to sing, the renowned playback singer backed out of the project due to a miscommunication between him and the film's director.
Ranjin had made a grand entry into music direction with the 2018 release Joseph, directed by M. Padmakumar, and soon became one of the favourites in the Malayalam film industry. Speaking about Sreekumar, Raj shared that the legendary singer had initially agreed to sing a song for the film he was working on. However, due to a misunderstanding between the director and Sreekumar, the latter decided not to sing for the film.
Raj, who holds Sreekumar in high regard, added that he never attempted to clarify the situation with the singer later. He admitted that he did not seek to justify his part in the incident.
Later on, during the making of Malikappuram, the film's screenwriter, Abhilash Pillai, approached M.G. Sreekumar to sing a song for the movie. However, upon learning that Ranjin Raj was the music composer, Sreekumar initially declined, saying he couldn't sing for him. Ranjin later explained the entire situation to Sreekumar, clarifying his role in the project and clearing up any misunderstandings. Ranjin said that he did this out of respect and admiration for Sreekumar. Eventually, Sreekumar agreed to sing the song, but on the day before the recording, the singer apparently requested certain rights or conditions, which led him to back out of the project.
Sreekumar’s legacy in the Malayalam music industry is well-known, with his voice being an integral part of many iconic songs. Raj expressed deep admiration for Sreekumar, describing him as one of the most significant figures in his musical journey. However, he also expressed his concern over the dislike that someone like M.G. Sreekumar, whom he considers a ‘Guru,’ has developed toward him over the years. (With inputs from Agencies)
