One of the leading actors in South Indian cinema, Vijay Sethupathi enjoys a massive fan following across the world. His latest film Gandhi Talks, released in theatres on January 30, 2026, is also set to stream on an OTT platform.

Away from the arc lights, Sethupathi married Jessie in 2003. The two first connected online and gradually fell in love. Known for keeping his personal life largely private, the actor has rarely spoken about his romance or family on social media. However, in a candid television appearance, he once revealed that his journey into cinema had initially created friction at home.

Sethupathi admitted that his wife was not keen on him pursuing acting. At one point, she was so upset that she even left the house. Recalling the episode on a TV show, he said:

“I knew she wouldn’t allow it, so I secretly began taking photographs. But Jessie found out. She was pregnant with our second child at the time. Jessie angrily said, ‘I’m going to my mother’s house,’ and walked out. I immediately ran behind her, placed my hand on her stomach and promised that I would not act anymore. I told her my family is my priority.”

The couple had first met while Sethupathi was working as an accountant in Dubai, where he came across Jessie through Yahoo Chat. Their relationship later turned into marriage, though some reports suggest that their families initially took time to accept the alliance.

After their wedding, Sethupathi had intended to return to Dubai for work. Jessie, who was based in Chennai, was uncomfortable with the idea of living apart. Eventually, he decided to settle permanently in Chennai.

Yet, giving up on his dream of becoming an actor proved difficult. Unable to abandon his passion, Sethupathi gradually re-entered cinema — first through short films and later in supporting roles. For a while, he even kept his acting pursuits hidden from his wife, though she eventually discovered the truth.

From those uncertain beginnings, Vijay Sethupathi went on to establish himself as one of the most versatile and celebrated actors in Indian cinema — balancing stardom with a family life he has always described as his true anchor.
