‘House of the Dragon’ lost its "moral center" and the actress behind the loss says she's grateful she got to keep the role as long as she did.

The Season 3 finale wrote off Queen Helaena Targaryen, played by Phia Saban, in one of the show's most devastating sequences yet.

Pregnant, isolated from her daughter Jaehaera, and worn down by a season of unsettling visions, Helaena climbs into an open window of the Red Keep and takes her own life, falling onto spikes below. Rhaenyra (Emma D'Arcy) discovers the empty room and the body only as the episode closes.

A death everyone saw coming

Saban has known this ending was coming since she booked the role back in 2022. She's said she dug into wikis and fan forums the moment she landed the part, and with a fanbase this dedicated, staying spoiler-free was never really an option.

Her reaction to finally reaching the moment was somewhat wry, she's just glad Helaena made it three whole seasons.

Helaena's final hours are set in motion by Mysaria (Sonoya Mizuno), who having just been cast aside by Rhaenyra visits the imprisoned queen to warn her that Aegon has returned alive, dragon and all, and that her unborn child could become a bargaining chip.

It's not the sole cause of Helaena's breaking point, Saban has explained, but it confirms a fear Helaena was already carrying, that she'll never again feel truly alive under the current order.

The final confrontation with Rhaenyra

Before her death, Helaena gets one last scene with Rhaenyra and doesn't hold back.

She accuses the queen of only pretending to care about her, and delivers what Saban describes as a hard truth that life has to mean more than simply avoiding death, and Helaena wants more for herself than the bare minimum of survival.

Saban worked with showrunners Ryan Condal and Sara Hess to shape that confrontation, drawing on conversations about Joan of Arc and the idea that reclaiming your own story can be its own kind of power, even in the face of death.

That theme carries into Helaena's parting gift to Rhaenyra, a tapestry she's been stitching all season. Its final panel appears to show Rhaenyra bleeding from a crown while seated on the Iron Throne, a haunting sendoff that Saban says blends the literal with the dreamlike, and which she isn't ready to fully confirm as a straightforward omen.

Turning a tragic scene into a "bucket list" moment

Despite calling the storyline "very sad" and admitting she still feels for the character she's played for five years, Saban found real joy in filming her final scene, mainly through the show's prosthetics work.

She got to lie still with her eyes open for the shot, something she calls a rite of passage for any actor who dies on screen, and she praised the crew for building out a strikingly lifelike prosthetic neck wound, spike and all.

The experience left her wanting to do an entire project done up in prosthetics.

How the show diverged from the books and why Saban doesn't mind

Helaena's arc has drifted further from George RR Martin's ‘Fire & Blood’ than almost any other character's.

In the book, Helaena dies by suicide only after her young son Maelor is brutally killed following the "Blood and Cheese" murder from Season 2 and she isn't pregnant when it happens. 

Saban says the book's version never really factored into her performance, she can only play the character and story the writers actually built for her and she credits those creative liberties with making Helaena a far richer role to play than a stricter book adaptation might have allowed.

What Helaena's death means for the final season

Emma D'Arcy, who plays Rhaenyra, has called Helaena the show's "moral heart," one of the only characters with real closeness to power who never let it corrupt her.

With Helaena gone, D'Arcy believes Rhaenyra is now locked onto her current path with no way back to a gentler style of leadership, and likely no way back to any kind of peace with Alicent either.

In D'Arcy's reading, Helaena's death seals Rhaenyra's isolation as she heads into the show's fourth and final season.

For Saban, saying goodbye after five years on the series is bittersweet. She's said the full weight of it probably won't hit until she watches the finished episode or until the rest of the cast heads back to work without her.
