Those who admire Matt Damon are aware that if the Academy Award-winning actor is starring in a film, there is a high chance that someone will be spending an unimaginable amount of money trying to bring him back home. Over the years, the 55-year-old actor has found himself stranded in some of the cinematic world’s most dangerous situations, forcing scientists and soldiers to carry out some of the most extraordinary missions to rescue him. Coincidence? Maybe. Expensive? Absolutely! Here's a look at some of those films where getting Matt Damon’s homecoming came at a staggering cost.

‘The Odyssey’ (2026):

Written and directed by Christopher Nolan, ‘The Odyssey’ is adapted from the Greek poet Homer’s famous work, ‘Odyssey’. The film, which will be released worldwide on Friday, stars Matt Damon in the lead role as Odysseus, the king of Ithaca, alongside Tom Holland and Anne Hathaway, among others. ‘The Odyssey’ is a film that tells the story of Odysseus, who has fought the Trojan War for a decade, and tries to return to his homeland along with his men. It journeys through the many hardships that he and his men encounter, which also includes mythical creatures. Built on a massive budget of $250 million, it’s a mythological epic film that is backed by Nolan’s producer wife, Emma Thomas.

‘The Martian’ (2015):

Another Matt Damon classic that journeys his return home is the 2015 blockbuster hit ‘The Martian’. A science fiction film helmed by Ridley Scott, it is based on Andy Weir’s 2011 novel by the same name. ‘The Martian’ revolves around Dr Mark Watney (played by Damon), who is sent to Mars on a NASA mission. There, during a severe dust storm that threatens the mission. Watney is hit by flying debris and is presumed dead. As the rest of his team embarks on their journey back to Earth, Watney is left behind to survive on his own until his presence on Mars is known to NASA through recorded satellite images. Eventually, the team plans to bring him back home, and once he arrives, he becomes a survival instructor for the astronauts. Released in September 2015, ‘The Martian’ was made on a budget of $104 million, and reportedly made a whopping collection of $630 million.

‘Interstellar’ (2014):

Much before ‘The Odyssey, ’ Christopher Nolan made a $165 million budget film to bring Damon home. ‘Interstellar’, which Nolan co-wrote with his brother Jonathan Nolan, starred Matthew MaCanoughey, Anne Hathaway, Bill Irwin, and others. It also features Damon as Dr. Mann, an astronaut who is sent on a space mission and gets stranded alone on an icy planet. A team is then sent to rescue him and bring him back to Earth. However, his character, an antagonist, tries to steal the aircraft of the rescue team and eventually dies. Touted as one of the greatest science fiction films, ‘Interstellar’ minted roughly about $774 million at the box office.

‘Saving Private Ryan’ (1998):

Starring Damon in the titular role, ‘Saving Private Ryan’ is an epic war film set in 1944 in Normandy, France, during World War II. Directed by Steven Speilsberg and written by Robert Rodat, it revolves around Captain John Miller (Tom Hanks), who is given the responsibility to bring back home young soldier Private James Francis Ryan, who has already lost his three brothers in action. ‘Saving Private Ryan’, made on a budget of $65-70 million, is touted as one of the best films to have realistically portrayed the combat scenes of World War II. Also considered as one of the greatest war films ever made, it reportedly earned over $480 million and has become a cult classic over the decades.
