Prithviraj Sukumaran's directorial L2: Empuraan has stormed past the ₹100 crore mark at the global box office in less than 48 hours, setting a new benchmark for Malayalam cinema. The much-anticipated sequel to Lucifer, starring Mohanlal, opened to massive numbers, with early estimates indicating a ₹22 crore haul across India on its first day.
Taking to X, Mohanlal wrote,"The Cicada himself. #L2E #Empuraan surpasses 100 crore at the box office worldwide in less than 48 hours, setting new benchmarks in cinematic history. A heartfelt thanks to all of you for being part of this extraordinary success! Your love and support made this possible."
According to trade tracking portal Sacnilk, L2: Empuraan collected ₹19.45 crore in Malayalam, ₹1.2 crore in Telugu, ₹80 lakh in Tamil, ₹50 lakh in Hindi, and ₹5 lakh in Kannada on its opening day. The film's official box office figures are yet to be released, but reports suggest it had already secured ₹80 crore through pre-sale reservations before release.
This achievement surpasses previous Malayalam box office records, including Prithviraj's Aadujeevitham (2024), which earned ₹7.6 crore on its opening day, and Mohanlal’s Marakkar: The Lion of the Arabian Sea (2021), which collected ₹6.8 crore.
Produced by Antony Perumbavoor, Gokulam Gopalan, and Subaskaran Allirajah, L2: Empuraan is among the most expensive Malayalam productions to date. With its staggering performance, the film has reaffirmed the growing global appeal of Malayalam cinema.
