As excitement builds among Indian fans for Coldplay’s upcoming concert in Mumbai, a wave of bittersweet news has emerged. Frontman Chris Martin has announced the band’s plans to retire after releasing their 12th studio album. 

In a recent interview with Apple Music 1, Martin stated, “We are only going to do 12 proper albums and that’s real. Having that limit means the quality control is so high right now and for a song to make it, it’s almost impossible, which is great. And so where we could be coasting, we’re trying to improve.” 

Currently, Coldplay has released nine albums, with their highly anticipated 10th album, Moon Music, set to drop on October 4. While the announcement of retirement may come as a shock, Martin clarified that while the band will retire from producing new albums, the members will continue to collaborate on various projects. 

Referencing iconic artists, Martin added, “There’s only seven Harry Potters. There’s only 12 ½ Beatles’ albums, there’s about the same for Bob Marley, so all our heroes. The musician told People magazine, “To make an album great as a band, it’s such a lot of wrangling of people, and I want to give the others some of their life for themselves.” 

In the meantime, Coldplay is gearing up for their long-awaited return to India after eight years. Their concerts are set for January 18, 19 and 21, 2025, at the D Y Patil Sports Stadium in Navi Mumbai. 

Initially planned as just two shows, a third was added due to overwhelming demand. However, ticket sales have been soiled by controversy, with fans expressing frustration over tickets selling out within minutes and later appearing on the black market at inflated prices. 

In light of these issues, BookMyShow’s CEO, Ashish Hemrajani, has been summoned by the Mumbai Police over allegations of a ticketing scam which is currently under investigation.
