It seems that things aren’t quite going according to plan for actor Ravi Mohan, who was previously known as Jayam Ravi, both on personal and professional fronts.
His much-hyped film Brother, released last year, which featured Bhumika Chawla as his sister and Priyanka Mohan as the female lead, failed to impress at the box office, leaving fans disappointed. While expectations were high for Brother, especially due to its central theme of sibling relationships, the film didn’t perform as expected, ultimately falling short of success.
In an effort to turn things around, Ravi Mohan's first release of the year, Kadhalikka Neramillai, was launched with great fanfare. The film featured the much-adored Nithya Menen as his co-star and was marketed as a fresh take on love. Unfortunately, the film’s box office performance has been equally underwhelming, with the latest reports revealing that it has managed to gross a modest ₹9 crore — far below expectations for a film with such star power.
Directed by Kiruthiga Udhayanidhi, Kadhalikka Neramillai featured a soundtrack composed by music maestro A. R. Rahman. Despite good music and a promising premise, the film failed to make a considerable impact on audiences, leaving both fans and critics disheartened.
Similarly, Brother did not deliver the expected success, which had been anticipated considering the heartwarming theme of sibling bonds. Ravi Mohan had explained that the film focused on the relationship between a brother and his sister, with him playing the role of a law student. Despite high expectations and the involvement of renowned director M. Rajesh — known for his fun-filled films such as Boss Engira Bhaskaran and Kadavu Irukaan Kumaru — Brother could not reach the heights anticipated.
According to close sources, Ravi Mohan had hoped that Brother would be a standout project, featuring beautiful sequences that catered to the expectations of his fans. However, despite his efforts, the film's failure to impress at the box office only added to his ongoing struggles.
This further confirms Ravi Mohan’s tough run in the industry following the massive success of Ponniyin Selvan, the magnum opus by Mani Ratnam.
Another of Ravi Mohan's films, Siren, which also starred Keerthy Suresh and Anupama Parameswaran, was released in 2024 but failed to make an impact at the box office.
A change of name: New beginnings for Ravi Mohan
In a surprising development, Jayam Ravi recently announced that he would henceforth be known as Ravi Mohan. Along with the name change, the actor revealed that he would be launching a new film production company, Ravi Mohan Studios, and also establishing the Ravi Mohan Fans Foundation to unite his fan clubs.
In a heartfelt note shared on social media, he reflected on his career, saying, “Cinema has always been my greatest passion, and it is the foundation of my career. It is the world of cinema that has shaped who I am today. Reflecting on my journey, I am deeply grateful for the opportunities, love, and support that cinema and all of you have given me.”
This change signals a new chapter in his career, one that is expected to offer fresh opportunities and a renewed sense of purpose.
A highly publicised divorce
Amidst his professional struggles, Ravi Mohan's personal life has also been in the spotlight. He recently announced his separation from his wife, Aarti, in a heartfelt post shared on social media. The actor explained that the decision to dissolve their marriage had not been taken lightly, and he urged fans and the media to respect his privacy during this difficult time.
Ravi Mohan and Aarti, who is the daughter of noted television producer Sujatha Vijayakumar, married in 2009 and have two children together. The actor stressed that the decision was made after careful reflection, and he requested understanding and privacy as they navigated the end of their relationship.
“I have taken the difficult decision to proceed with the dissolution of my marriage with Aarti. This decision was not made in haste, and it stems from personal reasons that I believe are in the best interests of everyone involved,” Ravi Mohan shared on social media. Despite his request for privacy, the separation turned into a media spectacle, with both parties making accusations, attracting unwanted attention.
Ravi Mohan’s resilience and future projects
Despite these setbacks, Ravi Mohan continues to enjoy the unwavering support of his fans. He remains a beloved and bankable star in the industry, with a promising future ahead. His career may have hit a rough patch, but he is only one successful film away from reclaiming his glory.
Looking ahead, Ravi Mohan has an exciting slate of projects lined up, including Genie, the sequel to his hit film Thani Oruvan, and an untitled film with director Sudha Kongara in which he plays the antagonist opposite Sivakarthikeyan. With these upcoming projects, Ravi Mohan hopes to return to form and continue to captivate audiences with his performances.
As his fans eagerly await his next big hit, it remains to be seen whether Ravi Mohan can overcome the challenges of the past year and make a triumphant return to the top of the industry.
