Recent re-releases of iconic films such as ‘Tumbbad’ and ‘Rockstar’ have not only stirred sentimental memories but also posted impressive box office numbers, defying the conventional wisdom that old films can't compete with modern blockbusters.

Tumbbad

Directed by Rahi Anil Barve, ‘Tumbbad’ is a folk horror that was first released in cinema halls in October 2018. The film had its re-release recently, on September 13. In the initial run at the box office, ‘Tumbbad’ didn’t make big numbers, collecting Rs. 15.46 crore. However, the film has so far earned Rs. 24.45 crore (and counting) within 11 days of its re-release. Mapping the success and the excitement around the movie, the makers recently announced its sequel. However, as per reports, Rahi has confirmed that he will not be helming the sequel.

Laila Majnu

Filmmaker Sajid Ali’s ‘Laila Majnu’, starring Tripti Dimri and Avinash Tiwary and presented by Imtiaz Ali, was released in cinema halls in September 2018. A romantic drama, it failed commercially at the box office upon its initial release. However, the movie was re-released on August 9 and was received with a great response. Not only did it earn Rs. 10.75 crore through its re-run in the theaters, but it also gained cult status and has now become a box office hit.

Rockstar

Director Imtiaz Ali’s critical and commercial success, ‘Rockstar’, was met with a stunning response upon its re-release, just as it had received when the film was first released more than a decade ago in November 2011. Back then, ‘Rockstar’ minted Rs. 108.7 crore. It earned another Rs. 10.5 crore upon its re-release on May 17, taking its lifetime collection to nearly Rs. 120 crore.

Veer-Zaara

Director-producer Yash Chopra’s epic romantic drama ‘Veer-Zara’ was barely a few lakhs behind to enter the Rs. 100 crore club when it was first released in November 2004. The film, featuring Shah Rukh Khan, Preity Zinta, and Rani Mukerji, had initially earned Rs. 97.64 crore. Thanks to its re-run in the theaters, the movie is now a part of the prestigious 100 crore club. Re-released on September 13, it has so far collected Rs. 4.25 crore.

Rehnaa Hai Terre Dil Mein

Another film that turned out to be a success at the box office upon its re-release is the R. Madhavan, Diya Mirza, and Saif Ali Khan starrer ‘Rehnaa Hai Terre Dil Mein.’ Directed by Gautham Vasudev Menon, it’s a remake of the director’s Tamil film titled ‘Minnale’. The original and the remake were released in 2001 and starred Madhavan in the lead. Made on a budget of Rs. 6 crore, its initial collections stood at Rs. 10.17 crore. Additional Rs. 3.2 crore were added to the film’s total collections through its re-release on August 30.
