Shashwat Dwivedi's ‘Bobby Beauty Parlour’ is now available to watch online. The 2024 short film stars Adrija Sinha, Parul Rana, Saksham Raj and Preeti Kochar. It runs for around 18 minutes and moves between friendship, growing up, fear and the difficult feeling of leaving someone behind.

The story follows childhood best friends Eelu and Manu, who find themselves stuck inside the local beauty parlour on an extremely hot day.

Manu works at the salon, while Eelu is preparing to leave their small town for college. When the owner, Bobby Aunty, suffers a heatstroke, the two friends are left inside the parlour and unable to get out because of the intense heat.

What begins as an ordinary afternoon slowly turns into something more complicated. The girls chat, laugh, dance and argue, but their carefree time together is interrupted when a man arrives looking for Eelu.

The situation brings their friendship, fears and plans for the future to the surface. At its heart, the film is about the strange period between childhood and adulthood, when friends can be deeply attached to each other while also wanting very different things from life.

Adrija Sinha plays Eelu, while Parul Rana portrays her best friend Manu. Saksham Raj appears as Arun and Preeti Kochar plays Bobby Aunty.

The film was directed by Shashwat Dwivedi, who also co-wrote it with Janhavi Asthana. Asthana served as the cinematographer, while Tanya Chhabria handled the editing.

Dwivedi has previously worked with filmmaker Anurag Kashyap as an assistant director and script supervisor. His earlier short film Paudha was selected for the Jagran Film Festival in 2019.

‘Bobby Beauty Parlour’ was produced by Anurag Kashyap, Ranjan Singh, Janhavi Asthana and Shashwat Dwivedi. The project also brought together a relatively young team behind the camera.

The film's small-town setting and focus on female friendship are central to its appeal. The beauty parlour becomes more than just a location, with the cramped space reflecting the uncertainty the two friends are dealing with as their lives begin moving in different directions.

Before its digital release, ‘Bobby Beauty Parlour’ travelled through several film festivals.

It had its world premiere at the Indian Film Festival of Los Angeles in June 2024 and later had its Indian premiere at the International Documentary and Short Film Festival of Kerala. It was also selected for the Dharamshala International Film Festival, the International Film Festival of South Asia in Toronto and other festivals.

The film has particularly been noted for its treatment of friendship and the awkward, sometimes painful stage of growing up.

Its story came from writer Janhavi Asthana's own thoughts about leaving friends behind while growing up and wondering whether those relationships would remain the same after moving away.
