‘Stree’ franchise:
‘Stree’ and ‘Stree 2’ are two of the most successful films of Rao’s career. ‘Stree’ was released in 2018, marking the directorial debut of Amar Kaushik. The film, which also stars Shraddha Kapoor, Abhishek Banerjee, and Aparshakti Khurrana, was later developed into Maddock Supernatural Universe, with ‘Munjya’ and ‘Stree 2: Sarkate Ka Atank’ also joining the universe.. Meanwhile, as per the box office collection, ‘Stree 2’ became a mega hit than its prequel. While ‘Stree’ earned about Rs. 180 crore, ‘Stree 2’ minted over Rs. 800 crore at the box office.
‘Badhaai Do’:
Starring Bhumi Pednekar and Rao in the leading roles, ‘Badhaai Do’ is a story of two LGBTQ+ individuals who decide to get married, to not reveal their sexuality in front of their family. The film gained widespread critical acclaim for attempting to normalize the portal of the lesbian and gay community. Despite the positive reviews, the film performed average at the box office. Yet, it is considered one of the best comedy dramas of Rao’s career.
‘Bareilly Ki Barfi’:
Directed by Ashwiny Iyer Tiwari, ‘Bareilly Ki Barfi’ is a romantic comedy-drama that stars Rao alongside Ayushmann Khurrana and Kriti Sanon in the leading roles. The film was released in 2017 and received critical acclaim for its performances, especially Rao. It also starred Pankaj Tripathi and Seema Pahuja in supporting roles. Made on a budget of Rs. 20 crore, the movie became a huge success, minting more than Rs. 58 crore.
‘Judgementall Hai Kya’:
Rao paired up opposite actor Kangana Ranaut in the 2019 film ‘Judgementall Hai Kya’, helmed by Kovelamudi. The film’s screenplay is written by Kanika Dhillon and is backed by Ektaa Kapoor under her production Balaji Motion Pictures. The story revolves around Bobby Grewal (Kangana Ranaut), a quirky and eccentric woman who suffers from acute psychosis and delusions. She becomes embroiled in a murder mystery involving her new tenant, Keshav (Rajkummar Rao), and his wife. The movie explored various topics such as trauma and mental health. It especially received praise for the performances of the leading pair.
