It's time to dig into the archives and revisit a hilarious moment from Bollywood's favorite chat show, ‘Koffee With Karan.’ In a past episode, Anushka Sharma showcased her sharp wit and playful humor when she made a tongue-in-cheek remark about actress Asin, known for her role in the hit film 'Ghajini', co-starring Aamir Khan. The comment may have been made in jest, but it's still widely remembered today - and we're throwing it back to relive the laughter!
Back in 2011, Anushka made her debut on Karan Johar’s celebrity chat show, alongside her ‘Band Baaja Baarat’ co-star Ranveer Singh. In the episode which aired on February 20, the show’s host discussed the on-screen chemistry of ANushka and Ranveer, apart from their successful debuts in the film industry.
The fun episode saw many hilarious moments that added to its viewership. However, one memorable moment is when Anushka took a jab at Asin. During the rapid fire round Karan asked Anushka: “You woke up one morning to realize you have turned into Ranveer Singh. What would you do?” To this, Anushkar responded, “I would pack all the debut trophies that he won and send it to Anushka Sharma because nobody gave her any when her first film came out.” Karan went on to ask her, “Who won it,” to which Anushka took a pause, and said, “A Sin.”
For the unversed, Anushka made her acting debut in 2008 with ‘Rab Ne Banadi Jodi,’ co-starring Shah Rukh Khan in the lead. The same year, Asin also made her Hindi debut with ‘Ghajini’; she won the Star Debut of the Year - Female and the Best Female Debut awards at the International Indian Film Academy (IIFA) Awards and Filmfare Awards, respectively.
Interestingly, in another interview, Anushka recalled crying like a child after she lost the debut awards to Asin. “Abhi Asin ne ye hi film Tamil mai bhi kari hai, Telugu mai bhi kari hai, and Kannada mai be kari hai, may be (Asin has done the same film in Tamil, Telugu, and may be in Kannada)… That ‘Ghajini ’ film… She has done it in all languages. She is already an actress for many years... Obviously usko nahi denge… Debut toh mera hua hai… Mai nai hu, maine nai film mai kaam kiya hai (Obviously they won’t give her… I’m new… I have done a new film)… I need the encouragement. I was convinced that I’m going to get it. But they gave it to her. I was very sad, I was very upset. I clapped, I clapped… I cried like a child.”
Though Anushka may have lost out on her debut awards, she did win several Best Actor (Female) awards for films such as ‘Band Baajaa Baaraat’, ‘Sultan’, and ‘Ae Dil Hai Mushkil’.
