Kayamkulam: Renowned actor KPAC Rajendran, who brought life to numerous characters on stage and screen, passed away on Thursday while undergoing treatment at Alappuzha Medical College Hospital. Known for his memorable performances in both theatre and television serials, Rajendran had a special place in the hearts of audiences across age groups. His portrayal of the character Padavalam Kuttanpillai in the popular TV serial Uppum Mulakum has won him widespread popularity.

A long-standing member of KPAC (Kerala People’s Arts Club), Rajendran had been actively involved with the troupe for over 43 years. He was not only a renowned actor but also a key organiser within the organisation. After the demise of prominent playwright Thoppil Bhasi, Rajendran played a major role in reviving and directing Bhasi’s plays for KPAC.

One of his most iconic roles was that of "Paramu Nair" in KPAC’s most-performed play Ningal Enne Communistakki ("You Made Me a Communist"). He took on the role following celebrated performances by Kambissery Karunakaranand P.J. Antony. For the past 25 years, Rajendran continued to portray the lead character in this milestone play.

Over the course of his career, Rajendran acted in nearly 30 stage productions under KPAC. He also served as the troupe's convener for a prolonged period of time. Though he eventually stepped back from stage performances to explore roles in television, his contributions to theatre remained noteworthy.

Rajendran began his journey in the arts field soon after completing his pre-degree education. He joined KPAC in 1983, debuting in the play Simham Urangunna Kaadu by S.L. Puram Sadanandan.

The Kerala Sangeetha Nataka Akademi honoured him with the Guru Pooja Award in recognition of his lifetime contributions to the performing arts last month.

Hailing from Mundakkayam, Rajendran was son of Raman Nair and Kunjikutty Amma. He had been residing in Kayamkulam for many years.

Leaders and cultural figures across the state have expressed their condolences. CPI State Secretary Binoy Viswam, Agriculture Minister P. Prasad, T.J. Anjalose, Baiju Chandran, Dr. Vallikavu Mohandas, and Adv. Solomon was among those who paid tribute to the late artist.
