Aamir Khan's recent marriage to longtime partner Gauri Spratt has sparked a fresh controversy after a Shahi Chief Mufti publicly objected to their interfaith union.

The actor, who married Gauri in a private registered ceremony on July 5 under the Special Marriage Act, is now facing a fatwa issued by Maulana Ibrahim Hussain, the Shahi Chief Mufti of the Muslim Personal Darul Ifta. The religious decree questions the validity of the marriage under his interpretation of Sharia, citing that Gauri is not a Muslim.

According to reports, the cleric stated that a Muslim man marrying a non-Muslim woman is not permissible unless she accepts Islam. In a video that has since gone viral, he is heard saying, "Muslim mard ke liye, iman walon ke liye, gair muslim se shaadi karna haraam hai."

He further maintained that Muslims entering such marriages are committing a religious wrongdoing and would ultimately be accountable for their actions before Allah.

Apart from objecting to the interfaith marriage, the Mufti also commented on repeated marriages and divorces. Referring to Aamir Khan's personal life, he said that entering multiple marriages without being able to fulfil the responsibilities attached to them cannot be justified. He also noted that protests had emerged following the actor's latest wedding.

So far, Aamir Khan and his team have not issued a public response to the remarks.

Aamir Khan first married Reena Dutta in 1986. The couple have two children, Junaid Khan and Ira Khan, before ending their marriage in 2002.

He later married filmmaker Kiran Rao in 2005 after the two worked together during Lagaan. They welcomed their son Azad Rao Khan through surrogacy in 2011 and announced their separation in 2021 while continuing to co-parent.
